Anthony, James

Anthony, John -- Paroled at Vicksburg -- All information on Pvt. John Anthony has been provided to us by his great, great grandson Joseph D. Barber.

John Anthony first enlisted with the "Jeff Davis Sharp Shooters" of the 7th Mississippi Infantry in April of 1862. He took part in the battle of Shiloh and suffered server wounds. After recovering he either enlisted with, or was transferred to  the 38th Mississippi on January 15, 1864, and took part in the Battle of Harrisburg. He was present when the 38th was forced to surrender in Gainesville, AL. John married Clarinda Spears and apparently moved to Tickfaw, LA in Tangipahoa Parish. Tickfaw is about 30 miles from Camp Moore, La., and it is a good bet the he was there during the war for a short time. Pvt. John Anthony died on October 22, 1926, and was laid to rest somewhere in Folsom, LA. in St. Tammany Parish.

Cox, L. (Lorenzo) D. (Dow) -- Discharged 8/23/63 -- The following info was supplied to me by Sam Pace. Thanks Sam for all of your hard work.

Born: abt. 1825 in Jones County, Mississippi. Married: abt. 1840. Died: on his farm in Marion County, Mississippi in late 1876 from wounds received in a shootout with William "Little Bill" Talran Morris, Jr. Buried in an unmarked grave in the Cox family cemetery, Marion County.

He enlisted in CO. I at Columbia Mississippi on March 25, 1862 according to payroll records. He was discharged in August 23, 1862 at Columbus, Mississippi after having been unfit for duty in his last 60 days of service due to "a chronic ulcer on the left foot resulting from caries (decay of a bone) of the bones of the foot and which has failed to heal under steady care? All most for two months and will prevent his marching or standing longer that a few hours & I recommend his dis charge from service..." Family knowledge states that before the war Lorenzo had accidentally split his foot open while chopping wood one day. The Confederate Army Certificate of Disability for Discharge supports this family legend.

Legend continues by saying that Lorenzo was ordered to report occasionally to recruiting officers in Columbia, Mississippi. In 1863 Lorenzo reported in Columbia to a Major Cage of Louisiana. A Dr. Langworthy examined his foot. He stated that it was perfectly serviceable for barefoot journeys through the woods, but it would be unable to endure the confinement of a marching boot.

Due to the rise in frequency of desertions from the Confederate Army at about that time, local Confederate authorities decided that Cox may be more useful to them in their conscription efforts than in the army. Many deserters had begun to hide in the sparsely settled region of southeast Mississippi in order to avoid being conscripted into the army. Marion County was an ideal area for this type of activity due to the swamps afforded by the Pearl River and its tributaries. These deserters (some native to the area) had a reputation for robbing law-abiding citizens in the area. So they were essentially a double-edged sword to the goals of the Confederate war effort by both denying manpower to the army and by lowering morale of the citizenry on the home front, whose men were either fighting in the army or were already either dead or disabled from military service. Cox served as a scout for the local Confederate recruiting officers in finding deserters’ hideouts and camps as well as in determining their activities. This secret service may have been what eventually, if only indirectly, cost Cox his life about ten years after the war was over.

Morris, W. (William) T. (Talran) -- Deserted 8/7/62 -- The following info was supplied to me by Sam Pace. Thanks Sam for all of your hard work.

Born: 13 May, 1827 - Marion County, Mississippi. Parents: Edmon & Sarah (Thompson) Morris. Died: 22 August 1875 in Marion County. Buried: Morris Cemetery in Improve Community, Marion County Mississippi.

He enlisted as a private in Company I, 38th Mississippi Infantry in Columbia, Mississippi on March 25, 1862 according to company payroll records. He was recorded as deserting the unit on August 7th of that same year. He likely "quit the war" since there are no other records of him serving in any other units. Animosity may have developed between him and Lorenzo Cox at this time, considering Lorenzo’s service as a scout searching out deserters and Bill’s status as a deserter from Confederate military service.
